Would Tim Thomas really be the Tampa Bay Lightning's answer in goal?
A report from Comcast Sportsnet said the Lightning was one of several teams that had spoken to the Bruins about goaltender Tim Thomas, and that Thomas would be willing to waive his no-trade clause if he went to a team for which he could be the starter.
Thomas has been a very good goaltender for the Bruins with a 126-91-35 record with 17 shutouts. But there are plenty of reasons to look at Thomas with caution.
For one, he is 36 years old and coming off a frustrating season in which he went 17-18-8 in 45 games with a .915 save percentage and 2.56 goals-against average and lost his No. 1 spot to Tuukka Rask. Okay, goalies, like every player, can struggle here or there. But the real concern would be the surgery Thomas underwent May 21 for a torn labrum in his left hip.
A story in the Boston Globe said the injury was from normal wear-and-tear, but it also said recovery time is three to four months. That means Thomas could be ready by late August, but perhaps more toward the start of September training camp would be a better guess. Thomas also will not be able to undertake his usual offseason program.
That is a lot of ifs for someone who has three years and $14 million left on his contract and is scheduled to make $6 million next season.
The Lightning has questions in goal, no doubt. Mike Smith has struggled the past season and a half, and Antero Niittymaki is an unrestricted free agent and would make a team a wonderful backup. So, it's not surprising general manager Steve Yzerman would be exploring his options.
I'm not saying a motivated Thomas could not bounce back and return to the elite form he showed in 2008-09, when he was 36-11-7 with a 2.10 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage. I'm just saying given Thomas' injury and his price, the buyer should definitely do his due diligence.

Yzerman won't overpay this summer
TheFourthPeriod.com
Lightning GM Steve Yzerman wants to improve his roster next season, but he isn't planning on overpaying for any big name free agents, reports the St. Petersburg Times.
"As much as I would love to have a big splash on July 1, I don't want to sign a player just to have a press conference," Yzerman told the paper. "It has to make sense. That's the discipline we have to have."
According to the Times, the Lightning is expected to go after a puck-moving defenseman next month, but the amount of available offensive blueliners this summer is thin.
"So there's going to be a real premium on the ones that are there," Yzerman said. "And those guys are not signing one-year deals. Can we afford to do that?"
Yzerman and club owner Jeff Vinik will settle on a budget next week. The salary cap is expected to increase from last season's $56.8 million.

The NHL on Thursday released the official selection positions for the June 25-26 draft in Los Angeles. Just for the record the Tampa Bay Lightning picks are (with the rounds in parenthesis) 6 (1), 63 (3), 66 (3), 72 (3), 96 (4), 118 (4), 156 (6), 186 (7).
General manager Steve Yzerman did not completely rule out using the No. 6 overall pick in a trade, but considering what it would cost to move up and that the team's chronic lack of organizational depth in terms of skaters means keeping draft picks and prospects is that much more important, he called the chance of a deal "remote."
Yzerman said his sense is not to draft based on any desire to fill a specific need. He prefers to pick the best player available, though considering the team's depth in net -- Mike Smith, Jaroslav Janus, Dustin Tokarksi, Riku Helenius, Karri Ramo (if he resigns) and big Russian Vasily Koshechkin (if he signs), goalie is probably not a first-round priority. Then again, you never say never to anything.
Some names to keep in mind at the No. 6 spot are center Alexander Burmistrov (Barrie, OHL); defenseman Cam Fowler (Windsor, OHL), defenseman Brandon Gormley (Moncton, QMJHL), right wing Brett Connolly (Prince George WHL), defenseman Erik Gudbranson (Kingston, OHL), left wing Nino Niederreiter (Portland, WHL) and 6-foot-5, 198-pound defenseman Derek Forbort (USHL).

The Tampa Bay Lightning had until June 28 to send qualifying offers to its restricted free agents in order to keep their negotiating rights. But the team, under general manager Steve Yzerman, got it done early, sending out 10 offers Wednesday while not sending offers to three others, basically setting them free to sign with any other team.
Players sent offers are forwards Steve Downie, Blair Jones, Martins Karsums, Teddy Purcell, Juraj Simek, Paul Szczechura and Nate Thompson, and defensemen Mike Lundin, Vladimir Mihalik and Paul Ranger.

GM Steve Yzerman says signing Marty St. Louis to a contract extension is "a priority"
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman put into motion a process which he hopes will end with a contract extension for star wing Marty St. Louis. Yzerman said he spoke on Wednesday to St. Louis' agent and hopes a deal that "makes sense" for both sides can be worked out.
"He's a first-class guy and he deserves to be treated with the utmost respect, and I'll do that," Yzerman said. "Where it ends up, we'll see. They want to make a deal that makes sense for them, and I have to make a deal that makes sense for us. We have some time to get it done, but it definitely is a priority for me."
It is an interesting turn of events. After last season, St. Louis, the 2004 regular-season MVP who turns 35 on Friday and has one year left on a deal that pays $4 million next season, said if he did not like the direction of the team he might ask for a trade. He also had been upset with Yzerman, who left him off Canada's gold-medal Olympic team, though that did not top St. Louis from calling Yzerman's hire a smart one for the organization.
But Yzerman sounded as if he couldn't do without the Laval, Quebec, native who last season had 29 goals, a team-best 65 assists and 94 points and is a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy.
"I had a great conversation with him," Yzerman said. "He's a very smart guy and prepared and thought out."
Of St. Louis' attributes, Yzerman said, "He had a tremendous year last year. He's in tremendous shape. He's a great leader. He's well respected in the locker room. He's a great example for our young players, so there's a lot of reasons other than his production on the ice that I would like to keep him in the organization and keep him on the team."
Still, Yzerman said, any deal must work within the team's long-term structure.
"All I can do right now is figure out what we can do and the type of contract, the length of it and the term we can do keeping in mind everything else we have to do over the next couple of years," Yzerman said, adding. "He's 35. He wants to win. He wants to be in a good program and he wants to negotiate a contract he feels good about, and I respect all of that and it makes perfect sense. ... You've got to find a solution that makes sense for both sides, and I hope we can do that."
St. Louis could not immediately be reached for comment.
Yzerman hit a bunch of topics on Wednesday:
* He said he has not spoken to defenseman Paul Ranger, who missed almost all of last season due to an undisclosed personal matter, but he intends to send a qualifying contract offer to Ranger to retain his negotiating rights. It would seem that Ranger, a good passer from the defensive zone, would be a fit in coach Guy Boucher's offense, which thrives on pushing the puck forward. Qualifying offers must be sent out by June 28. Lightning players who likely won't be qualified, making them free agents, are center Chris Lawrence, right wing Lauri Tukonen and left wing Radek Smolenak.
* Yzerman said he will try to re-sign free agent defenseman Kurtis Foster if the numbers make sense.
* With the No. 6 pick in the draft, Yzerman said he wants the best player available, but did not tip his hand as to who is on top of Tampa Bay's board. Yzerman said there is a "remote" chance he will trade the pick.
* He said he and owner Jeff Vinik have yet to determine the budget for salaries for next season, and a big splash in free agency is not likely, though not impossible. He said it is more likely he will wait to see who is left over after the first flurry of big-time, big-money signings.
* Yzerman said he still is deciding who will coach AHL Norfolk and be its general manager. Those decisions might not come until mid to late July. Jim Johnson, who took over last season after coach Darren Rumble was fired, still is under contract.

Mathieu Darche says Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher is "too good to be true"
As has just about every reporter who covered the Tampa Bay Lightning's signing of Guy Boucher as its new head coach, I spoke to Mathieu Darche to get some insight. Darche, who played for the Lightning in 2007-08, and played for Boucher last season for AHL Hamilton, said Boucher is detailed, smart and driven. He also said that more than X's and O's, it is Boucher's ability to handle people that is his greatest quality.
"It's hard to explain," Darche said. "I know he sounds too good to be true when you hear me talk about him, but that's the way he is."
First, some background. Darche, 33, has known Boucher for 20 years, since Boucher went to school in Montreal with Darche's older sister Isabelle. It was at Montreal's McGill University that Darche and Boucher earned each other's respect. Darche, a left wing, had just one assist in 15 games for McGill in 1996-97. Boucher, an assistant, made Darche a special project. The next season, Darche had 21 goals, 34 points in 26 games.
"Guy worked with me every single day after practice, working on shooting and skating" Darche said.
But it was last season, as Hamilton was on its way to team records of 52 victories and 115 points, that Darche said he witnessed the most important aspect of how Boucher works.
"Aside from all the X's and O's, I think the greatest strength for guy is how he deals with the players, the psychology behind it," Darche said. "How he deals with the guys is unbelievable. He makes the fourth-line guys feel so valuable and involved. I've seen fourth-line guys playing three shifts a game, and they leave the game so happy. They make a good play and Guy will make a point to point it out, so you feel like you're contributing."
Darche said Boucher's door is always open, though it is the coach who many times will have the players in for conversations.
"He doesn't coach a team," Darche said. "He coaches individuals."
"It's a people business before it's a hockey business," said Boucher, who has a master's degree in sports psychology from the University of Montreal. "My approach is very personal, very individual. The team will come after that. I always say, if I have 24 guys, I need 24 ways to coach."
Asked to explain in greater detail, Boucher said, "You've got guys who answer better to task-oriented interventions. You have guys who answer better to emotional interventions and you have guys who answer better to images. Every person is different. If you approach them the same way, you're only going to get a third of the people in a room. My job is to get that other two-thirds also."
Darche said the best example was Boucher's handling of a game right before a five-day Christmas break. Darche said because players were coming off injuries and because the parent-club Canadiens returned several players, Hamilton's roster was so cluttered it was scratching four players a night .
Darche had three goals, including the winner, an assist and six shots in the 5-4 overtime victory over Rochester.
"And for that game, the players of the game were the four guys who were in the stands," Darche said. "They had an outstanding attitude all week. They were the first guys to cheer when you got off the ice. They got the player of the game just for their contributions for team spirit. It made guys feel good about themselves."
"People talk about systems," Boucher said. "But for me, it's all about coaching people."
|
| |
|
|
|
|
"It was an outstanding professional opportunity for me," Martin said of Tampa Bay. "But at the end of the day, weighing all the professional and personal aspects and the family situation, we felt Detroit a better situation."
